Indications/Uses
In combination w/ antiretrovirals for treatment of HIV infection in adult & childn >3 mth. In combination w/ zidovudine for post-exposure prophylaxis of HIV infection in healthcare workers exposed occupationally.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Treatment of HIV infection Adult & adolescent ≥50 kg 150 mg bid or 300 mg once daily in combination w/ zidovudine 200 mg tid. Adult <50 kg 2 mg/kg body wt bid in combination w/ zidovudine 200 mg tid. Childn 3 mth-12 yr 4 mg/kg body wt, up to 150-mg dose, bid in combination w/ zidovudine 180 mg/m2 body surface every 6 hr. Post-exposure prophylaxis of HIV infection in healthcare workers 150 mg bid in combination w/ zidovudine 200 mg tid for 4 wk.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Not to be used as monotherapy or in combination w/ zalcitabine. Renal function impairment, history of pancreatitis, peripheral neuropathy, known risk factors for liver disease. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, fatigue, skin rash, insomnia, paresthesias, pancreatitis, peripheral neuropathy.
