Mefloquine HCl
Indications/Uses
Malaria caused by malarial strains sensitive to mefloquine especially Plasmodium vivax & Plasmodium falciparum.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Curative treatment Adult & childn >45 kg Total dosage: 1,250-1,500 mg. A lower total dosage of 750-1,000 mg is sufficient for patients living in malarious areas. Childn <45 kg 25 mg/kg as a single dose or in 2 divided doses every 6 hrly.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Best taken w/ meals & a full glass of water.
Contraindications
Patients w/ renal insufficiency, severe impairment of liver function or w/ history of psychiatric disturbances or convulsions. Early pregnancy, young childn.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, balance disturbances, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite. Rarely, headache, bradycardia, rash or pruritus, weakness.
Drug Interactions
Mefloquine should not be given in conjunction w/ quinine or related compd, halofantrine.
