Metformin HCl
Indications/Uses
NIDDM, alone or in combination w/ sulfonylurea. IDDM to reduce the dosage of insulin required.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 1 tab bid morning & evening. Daily dosage may be increased by 1 tab at wkly intervals up to max 6 tab daily. Maintenance: 1 tab bid-tid.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ or after meals.
Contraindications
Diabetic coma & ketoacidosis; active or history of lactic acidosis; severe hepatic disease, renal disease; condition associated w/ hypoxemia eg, CHF & MI; alcoholism.
Special Precautions
Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Annual monitoring of folic acid & vit B12 levels. Regular monitoring of renal function & blood glucose level.
Adverse Reactions
Anorexia, dyspepsia, flatulence, metallic taste, nausea, vomiting, headache, wt loss. Lactic acidosis.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol, cimetidine, furosemide.
