Metronidazole
Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections of anaerobic bacteria. Prevention of post-op anaerobic bacterial infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Loading dose: 15 mg/kg infused over 1 hr. Maintenance: 7.5 mg/kg 6 hrly for at least 7 days.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. 1st trimester of pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Active CNS diseases; blood dyscrasias; hepatic impairment; cardiac failure.
Adverse Reactions
Urticaria, dizziness, GI disturbances, change in taste sensation, peripheral neuropathy, thrombophlebitis.
Drug Interactions
Phenobarb increases the metabolism of metronidazole. Alcohol may cause disulfiram-like reaction. Enhances activity of warfarin. Cimetidine decreases the metabolism of metronidazole.
