Neostigmine methylsulfate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of myasthenia gravis, prevention & treatment of post-op distention & non-obstructive urinary retention. Antidote to tubocurarine & other nondepolarizing muscular-blocking agents after surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Antimyasthenic 0.5-2.5 mg IM or SC. Post-op distention or urinary retention 0.5-1 mg IM or SC. If no response w/in 1 hr of the 1st dose for treatment of urinary retention, the patient should be catheterized. Repeat dose every 3 hr for 5 doses after the bladder has been emptied. Antidote to nondepolarizing neuromuscular-blocking agents 0.5-2.5 mg slow IV, repeated as required up to total dose of 5 mg.
Contraindications
Peritonitis, mechanical intestinal or urinary tract obstruction, UTI.
Special Precautions
Epilepsy, bronchial asthma, bradycardia, AV block, hyperthyroidism, cardiac arrhythmias, peptic ulcer.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, miosis, excessive salivation & sweating, increased bronchial secretions, abdominal cramps, bradycardia, bronchospasm. Weakness, muscle cramps, fasciculation, hypotension.
