Minoxidil
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr Initially 5 mg as single daily dose, may be increased to 10, 20, 40 mg daily in single or divided doses, if necessary. Max: 100 mg/day. Childn <12 yr Initially 0.2 mg/kg as single dose & may be increased, if necessary. Max: 50 mg/day. Intervals between dosage adjustments should be at least 3 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Observe for signs & symptoms of pericarditis, pericardial effusion, tamponade, & perform ECGs if necessary. Administer w/ loop diuretics for prevention of fluid retention; w/ β-blockers or other sympathetic nervous system suppressant for prevention of angina pectoris. Hypertrichosis. Hematocrit, Hb conc & erythrocyte count may decrease. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Pericardial effusion & occasionally w/ tamponade, T waves direction & magnitude changes; nausea, vomiting; decreased hematocrit, Hb & erythrocyte count, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia; rash, Stevens-Johnson sydrome; increased alkaline phosphatase, increased serum creatinine; temporary edema, breast tenderness; elongation, thickening, enhanced pigmentation of fine body hair.
Drug Interactions
May increase hypotensive effect w/ diuretics & other hypotensive drugs. Profound orthostatic hypotension w/ guanethidine.

C02DC01 - minoxidil ; Belongs to the class of pyrimidine derivative agents acting on arteriolar smooth muscle. Used in the treatment of hypertension.
