Indications/Uses
Ante partum: Initiation or improvement of uterine contraction in order to achieve early vag delivery where it is desirable for reasons of fetal or maternal concern. Post partum: To produce uterine contractions during the 3rd stage of labor & to control postpartum bleeding & hemorrhage.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Induction or stimulation of labor IV inj 0.5-2 MU/min. May be increased to 1-2 MU/min at 15-30 min interval. Incomplete or inevitable abortion IV infusion 10-20 MU/min, should not exceed 3 mL of octocin-10 (30 U) in a 12-hr period.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Cephalopelvic disproportion, fetal distress, uterine hypertonicity.
Adverse Reactions
Anaphylactic reaction, postpartum hemorrhage, cardiac arrhythmia, hypertensive episode, fatal afibrinogenemia, nausea & vomiting, uterine hypertonicity, spasm, tetanic contraction or rupture of the uterus.
