Why do I need this medicine?
Perampanel is used on its own or together with other medicines to treat epilepsy (also known as fits or seizures).
How do I take this medicine?
Take Perampanel exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take Perampanel with or without food. It is best to take it in the evening. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Perampanel is available as a tablet or oral suspension.

If you are taking the oral suspension or syrup, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

Perampanel must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it suddenly as this may worsen your condition.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
If you miss a dose, do not take the missed dose. Take only at your next scheduled dose and meal.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • severe liver disease
  • moderate to severe kidney disease
as Perampanel may not be suitable for you.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • at risk of falls
  • mild to moderate liver disease
  • mild kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

It is important for you or your family members to monitor your condition especially at the start of treatment and if your dosage is still being adjusted. If you experience new or sudden changes in your mood or behaviour, or having thoughts of self-harm, contact your doctor immediately.
What side effects could I experience?
This medicine may cause dizziness or for you to suddenly fall asleep during your daily activities. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other side effects may include any of the following: nausea, vomiting, increased or decreased appetite, tiredness, back pain, blurred vision, imbalance while walking, lack of muscle control, confusion, and increased weight.

A serious allergic reaction which may affect your skin or other parts of your body may develop while you are taking Perampanel. If you experience skin rash, fever, swollen glands that do not go away, swelling of your face, shortness of breath, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, or dark urine, stop taking this medicine and alert your doctor immediately.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any sudden or unusual changes in your mood, behaviour, thoughts or feelings (e.g. confusion, irritability, being agitated or too depressed, suicidal thoughts).

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • other medicines used to treat epilepsy e.g. carbamazepine, phenytoin, oxcarbazepine
  • midazolam (medicine for sleep disorder or anxiety)
  • rifampicin (medicine used to treat TB, an infection known as tuberculosis)
  • ketoconazole (medicine to treat fungal infection)
  • birth control pills
  • St John’s wort (herbal supplement)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Perampanel.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

The oral solution should be used within 90 days after opening.
