Budesonide
Indications/Uses
Bronchial asthma. Acute laryngotracheo-bronchitis (croup) in infants & childn. Replacement or reduction in oral steroid therapy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1-2 mg bid. Maintenance: 0.5-1 mg bid. Childn Initially 0.5-1 mg bid. Maintenance: 0.25-0.5 mg bid. Acute laryngotracheobronchitis (CROUP) Infant & childn 2 mg as a single dose.
Special Precautions
Risk of impaired adrenal function in patients transferring from oral steroids. Not for rapid relief of acute episodes of asthma. Patients w/ severely compromised liver function. Concomitant use w/ ketoconazole & itraconazole in long-term treatment. Monitor childn's growth. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Mild throat irritation, candida infection in the oropharynx, hoarseness, coughing.
Drug Interactions
Increased systemic exposure w/ CYP450 inhibitors (eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole).
