Rifampicin
Indications/Uses
Bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, TB, otitis, gonorrhoea, cholecystitis & cholangitis, carbuncles, cellulitis, wound infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 300-600 mg bid. Gonorrhea 900 mg as a single dose daily. TB 600 mg once a day in combination w/ other tuberculostatic agents. Childn ≤12 yr 20 mg/kg body wt/day.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Best taken 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Jaundice.
Special Precautions
Alcoholics. Hepatic impairment. 1st trimester of pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
GI effects, abnormal liver function, jaundice, febrile reaction w/ flu-like symptoms. Alteration in kidney function & renal failure (due to hypersensitivity). Skin reactions, eosinophilia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia purpura, haemolysis, shock. Red colouring of urine, sputum & tears. Staining of soft contact lenses.
Drug Interactions
Decreases effectiveness of corticosteroids, coumarin anticoagulant, digitoxin, methadone, OC, tolbutamide.
