Salbutamol sulfate
Indications/Uses
Long-term treatment of asthma. Symptomatic management of bronchospasm in patients w/ reversible, obstructive airway disease eg, asthma, chronic COPD & chronic bronchitis-associated bronchospasm.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >14 yr 5-10 mL tid-qid. Childn over 6-14 yr 5 mL tid-qid, 2-6 yr Initially 0.4 mg/kg body wt tid, 10-20 kg 2.5-5 mL tid. Elderly & β-adrenergic stimulator sensitive patients 5 mL tid-qid.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to adrenergic amines.
Special Precautions
CV disease (arrhythmia, HTN or heart failure), convulsive disorders, diabetes, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism or hypokalemia. Elevation of BP, heart rate, risk of arrhythmia, serum glucose, decrease of serum K. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Angina, atrial fribillation, arrhythmias, chest discomfort, chest pain, extrasystoles, flushing, hyper-hypotension, palpitation, supraventricular tachycardia, tachycardia; CNS stimulation, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, insomnia, irritability, lightheadedness, migraine, nervousness, nightmares, restlessness, seizure; angioedema, rash, urticaria; hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, lactic acidosis; diarrhea, dry mouth, dyspepsia, gastroenteritis, nausea, unusual taste, vomiting; micturition difficulty; muscle cramps, musculoskeletal pain, tremor, weakness; otitis media, vertigo; asthma exacerbation, bronchospasm, cough, epistaxis, laryngitis, oropharyngeal drying/irritation & edema, pharyngitis, rhinitis, upper resp inflammation, viral resp infection; allergic reaction, anaphylaxis, diaphoresis, lymphadenopathy.
Drug Interactions
Bronchodilating effects may be inhibited w/ β-blockers. May have increased pressor response w/ methyldopa. Severe headache, HTN & hyperpyrexia may occur w/ MAOIs. Potentiated pressor response w/ TCAs. Enhanced toxicity w/ theophylline; decreased theophylline levels may occur.
