Concise Prescribing Info
Silver sulfadiazine
Prevention & treatment of burn wounds infection. As an aid to short-term treatment in other skin conditions eg, leg ulcers. Aid to prophylaxis of skin grafting infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Apply to burned/affected areas once or bid; approx 1.5 mm thick. May be re-applied if necessary.
Pregnancy. Premature or newborn infants during the first 2 mth.
Special Precautions
Renal & hepatic impairment. May inactivate topical proteolytic enzymes which may result to escharectomy. Monitor sulphonamide conc & renal function in patients w/ extensive burns. Urinalyses may be required prior to & periodically during treatment to detect crystalluria &/or urinary calculi formation. May result in haemolytic anaemia in patients w/ G6PD deficiency. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Burning, skin photosensitivity, pruritus, skin rash & brown-grey skin discolouration. Application to extensive BSA or prolonged-use may produce argyria, blood dyscrasias including agranulocytosis, aplastic anaemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, haemolytic anaemia, dermatologic & allergic reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
Drug Interactions
Enzymatic debriding agents. Oral hypoglycaemic agents & phenytoin.
