Furosemide
Indications/Uses
Edema due to cardiac, hepatic or renal disorders; due to burns. HTN.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent ≥15 yr 20-40 mg by IM/IV. Acute pulmonary edema Initially 40 mg by IV. Forced diuresis 20-40 mg given in addition to infusion of electrolyte soln. Infants & childn <15 yr Life-threatening conditions 1 mg/kg/day up to a max 20 mg.
Contraindications
Cross-sensistivity w/ sulfonamides. Renal failure accompanied by anuria. Hepatic coma, hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hypovolemia w/ or w/o hypotension. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Hypotension, gout, severe liver disease. K-rich diet is advisable. May impair ability to drive or operate machines.
Adverse Reactions
Fluid & electrolyte loss, metabolic alkalosis. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, allergic reactions. Hematologic changes.
Drug Interactions
Cardiac glycosides, aminoglycosides, cisplatin, ACE inhibitors, indomethacin, salicylate, theophylline & lithium.
