Cephalexin monohydrate
Indications/Uses
Bacterial infection, otitis media, resp tract infections, GUT infections, skin & soft tissues infections, dental & bone infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap Adult 1-2 cap qid. Childn 25-50 mg/kg qid. Dry syr Adult 125 mg/5 mL syr 2-4 tsp qid. 250 mg/5 mL syr 1-2 tsp qid. Childn 25-50 mg/kg qid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Allergic reactions. Marked renal impairment. Hypersensitivity to penicillins.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, superinfection, hypersensitivity, genital & anal pruritus. Rarely, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, erythema multiforme, pseudomembranous colitis, anaphylaxis.
Drug Interactions
Bacteriostatic antibiotics may reduce cephalosporin effectiveness. Probenecid may increase & prolong cephalosporin plasma level & toxicity.
