Indications/Uses
Gallstone dissolution & prevention; primary biliary cirrhosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Gallstone dissolution 8-10 mg/kg/day given in 2 or 3 divided doses. Gallstone prevention 600 mg/day (300 mg bid) in patients undergoing rapid wt loss. Primary biliary cirrhosis 10-15 mg/kg/day in 2-4 divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Gallstone complications eg, biliary GI fistula, biliary obstruction, cholangitis, cholecystitis, pancreatitis; hepatic impairment. Starvation diet. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Acute cholecystitis.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea.
Drug Interactions
Absorption decreased by Al-containing antacids, cholestyramine, colestipol. Effect decreased by antihyperlipidemics (especially clofibrate), estrogens, neomycin, progestins.
