Indications/Uses
Vaccination against varicella in individuals ≥12 mth.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC Adult & adolescent ≥13 yr 0.5 mL dose at elected date then a 2nd 0.5 mL dose 4-8 wk later. Childn 12 mth to 12 yr 0.5 mL single dose. Min interval of 3 mth between doses if 2nd dose is administered.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the vaccine & gelatin. History of anaphylactoid reaction to neomycin. Blood dyscrasias, leukemia, lymphomas of any type, other malignant neoplasms affecting bone marrow or lymphatic system. Immunosuppressive therapy (including high-dose corticosteroids). Primary & acquired immunodeficiency states including immunosupression in association w/ AIDS or other clinical manifestations of infection w/ HIV. Family history of congenital or hereditary immunodeficiency. Active untreated TB & any active febrile illness w/ fever >38.5°C. Pregnancy (avoid for 3 mth following vaccination in postpuberty in females).
Special Precautions
Do not inj IV. Anaphylactoid reactions. HIV patients w/ & w/o evidence of immunosuppression. Avoid close contact w/ susceptible high-risk patients (eg, immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women & their newborn infants w/o documented history of chickenpox or lab evidence of prior infection) for up to 6 wk. Defer vaccination for at least 5 mth following blood/plasma transfusions or administration of Ig or varicella zoster Ig (VZIG); or do not give any Ig including VZIG 2 mth thereafter. Avoid pregnancy for 3 mth following vaccination. Lactation. Childn <1 yr. Not recommended for infant <12 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Inj-site complaints (eg, soreness, erythema, swelling, rash, pruritus, pyrexia, hematoma, induration, numbness); fever ≥100 or 102°F (37.8 or 38.9°C) oral; varicella-like rash (generalized or inj site, median 5 or 2 lesions).
Drug Interactions
Reye syndrome w/ salicylates (avoid use for 6 wk after vaccination).
