Orlistat
Indications/Uses
Long-term treatment of obese & overwt patients, including patients w/ risk factors associated w/ obesity, in conjunction w/ a mildly hypocaloric diet. Treatment results in an improvement of risk factors & comorbidities associated w/ obesity, including hypercholesterolemia, NIDDM, impaired glucose tolerance, hyperinsulinemia, HTN & a reduction of visceral fat. Provides additional glycaemic control in combination w/ antidiabetic agents eg, metformin, sulfonylurea &/or insulin in type 2 diabetic patients who are overwt (BMI >28 kg/m2) or obese (BMI >30 kg/m2), in conjunction w/ a mildly hypocaloric diet.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately before or during or up to 1 hr after each main meal. If a meal is missed or contains no fat, the dose may be omitted.
Contraindications
Chronic malabsorption syndrome, cholestasis. Pregnancy, lactation.
Special Precautions
Adverse Reactions
Oily spotting, flatus w/ discharge, fecal urgency, fatty/oily stool, oily evacuation, increased defecation, fecal incontinence (the higher the fat content of the diet, the higher the incidence of these adverse reactions). Abdominal pain/discomfort, flatulence, liquid stools, soft stools, rectal pain/discomfort, tooth disorder, gingival disorder.
Drug Interactions
Decrease absorption of oral fat soluble-nutrients.
