Live attenuated varicella-zoster virus (Oka/Merck strain)
Indications/Uses
Prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) & postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Reduction of acute & chronic zoster-associated pain. Immunization of individuals ≥50 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC Inj the total vol of reconstituted vaccine into the upper arm (preferably in deltoid region).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to gelatin. History of anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reaction to neomycin. Primary & acquired immunodeficiency states due to acute & chronic leukemias; lymphoma; other conditions affecting the bone marrow or lymphatic system; immunosuppression due to HIV/AIDS; cellular immune deficiencies. Immunosuppressive therapy (including high-dose corticosteroids). Active untreated TB. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Do not inj intravascularly. Anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reaction. Not for treatment of zoster, PHN or zoster-associated pain. Defer vaccination in the presence of fever >38.5°C (>101.3°F). HIV-infected patients w/ or w/o evidence of immunosuppression. Lactation. Not recommended for use in childn. Avoid pregnancy for 3 mth following vaccination.
Adverse Reactions
Erythema, pain, swelling, pruritus. Headache; hematoma, warmth, induration; pain in extremity.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ antivirals known to be effective against varicella-zoster virus. Reduced immunogenicity w/ pneumococcal vaccines.
