Hypothyroidism (Pediatric) Disease Summary

Last updated: 03 December 2014

Overview

Hypothyroidism is due to decreased or absent production of thyroid hormone.
In the case of congenital hypothyroidism, most infants appear unaffected at birth, and signs and symptoms may be delayed until 6-12 weeks of age or older.
It must be noted that the patient’s age must be considered in the interpretation of thyroid function results.
Treatment should be started if the obtained capillary thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration on neonatal screening is ≥40 mU/L and another venous blood sample has been obtained.
