Overview
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis was formerly known as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis or juvenile chronic arthritis is the most common autoimmune-autoinflammatory disease in children.
It presents as chronic joint swelling, pain with functional limitation for at least 6 weeks of unknown cause that starts before 16 years of age.
It must be noted that early and accurate diagnosis is important to start the correct management to promote normal growth and development, and to lessen disability and deformity.
The objectives in treating children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis are achieving disease remission, controlling pain, preserving range of motion, muscle strength and function, controlling systemic complications, and fostering normal nutrition, growth, and physical and psychological development.
