Imaging
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Diagnostic Tests
Radiographic imaging and vestibular function testing are not needed if history and the Dix-Hallpike maneuver confirm the diagnosis of BPPV. There are no radiologic findings characteristic of or diagnostic for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Further radiologic imaging (eg magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] without intravenous contrast) is indicated in patients where posterior circulation infarct or spinal cord involvement is suspected. Audiometry is not required to diagnose benign paroxysmal positional vertigo; however, it may offer diagnostic benefits for patients in whom the clinical diagnosis of BPPV is unclear.
Meniere’s Disease
There is no definitive or specific diagnostic test for Meniere’s disease. Diagnosis is based mostly on history and presenting clinical symptoms.
