Mastitis Disease Summary

Overview

Mastitis is the inflammation of the breast that may or may not be associated with bacterial infection.
Signs and symptoms of mastitis include firm, erythematous, tender, swollen area in the affected breast, skin that may appear shiny and tight with red streaks, fever or temperature of >38°C, and axillary pain and swelling from reactive lymphadenopathy, which may be accompanied by headache, myalgia, lethargy, nausea, anxiety, flu-like aching, or systemic illness.
Diagnosis of mastitis is based on clinical evaluation.
Pharmacotherapy includes symptomatic therapy plus antibiotic therapy (eg Flucloxacillin or Dicloxacillin, first-Generation cephalosporins, Clindamycin, Vancomycin or Lincomycin).
