Pseudohyponatremia

Pseudohyponatremia is an artifactual reduction in apparent plasma sodium concentration due to the presence of a marked elevation of plasma lipids or proteins. This occurs when seemingly low sodium is actually at a normal level with abnormally high concentrations of lipids or proteins in the blood interfering with the accurate measurement of sodium. Pseudohyponatremia is also caused by hyperglycemia, Mannitol use, or laboratory errors.
