Conjunctivitis - Allergic, Seasonal and Perennial_Management 5The frequency of follow-up depends on the severity of the disease, etiology, and treatment. Interval history, visual acuity, and slit-lamp biomicroscopy measurement should be performed. Baseline and periodic intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement and pupillary dilation should be done if corticosteroids have been used in treating the patient's chronic or recurrent conjunctivitis. Assess for possible side effects such as cataracts and glaucoma. Patients requiring repeat short-term topical corticosteroid therapy should be informed of its possible complications.
Referral to a specialist is recommended if any of the following conditions are present: An eye that cannot open or be kept open; marked pain or photophobia; history of trauma or a foreign body; copious or progressive discharge; an asymmetric or non-reactive pupil; ciliary flush; corneal opacity; and visual acuity loss.
