Loperamide HCl
Indications/Uses
Relief of acute nonspecific diarrhoea & chronic diarrhoea associated w/ inflammatory bowel disease. To reduce the vol of discharge from ileostomies.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 6-8 mg/day. Max: 16 mg/day. Childn 9-12 yr 6 mg/day in divided doses, 6-8 yr 4 mg/day in divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Severe colitis or diarrhoea associated w/ pseudomembranous colitis from treatment w/ antibiotics.
Special Precautions
Correct severe dehydration or electrolyte imbalance before initiation of treatment. Conditions where constipation must be avoided, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, diarrhoea caused by infectious organisms, hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain & other GI disturbances including toxic megacolon; dry mouth; dizziness, fatigue, CNS depression; nausea, vomiting & loss of appetite; skin rashes; constipation.
