Meropenem trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of pneumonias & nosocomial pneumonias; UTI; intra-abdominal, gynaecological, skin & skin structure infections; meningitis; septicaemia; empiric treatment for presumed infections in adults w/ febrile neutropenia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Adult Pneumonia, UTI, gynaecological infections, skin & skin structure infections 500 mg 8 hrly. Nosocomial pneumonias, peritonitis, infections in neutropenic patients, septicaemia 1 g 8 hrly. Meningitis 2 g 8 hrly. Infant >3 mth to childn up to 12 yr 10-20 mg/kg 8 hrly. Meningitis 40 mg/kg 8 hrly.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
History of hypersensitivity to β-lactam antibiotics. Overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms may occur. Infections caused by methicillin-resistant staphylococci. Concomitant w/ valproic acid & Na valproate. Hepatic disease; history of pseudomembranous colitis. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Infant <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Inflammation, thrombophlebitis, inj site pain; nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea; thrombocythaemia; increased serum transaminases, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, lactic dehydrogenase.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid increases elimination half-life & plasma conc. Reduced serum valproic acid levels.
