Tropicamide
Indications/Uses
Mydriasis & cycloplegia for diagnostic purposes. For cycloplegic effect in refractions.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Skiascopic exam Instill 1-2 drops of 1% soln, repeat w/in 5 min. If patient cannot be examined w/in 20-30 min, an additional drop may be instilled to prolong mydriatic effect.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Suspected or diagnosed angle-closure glaucoma.
Special Precautions
Not for inj or ingestion. Estimate depth of anterior chamber angle prior to use. Use w/ care in patients susceptible to belladonna alkaloids. Consider possibility of CNS & behavioural disturbances. Use w/ caution during treatment of ocular inflammation. Close monitoring in patients w/ HTN, hyperthyroidism, DM, or cardiac disorders. Do not use while wearing soft contact lenses, reinsert after 15 min. Contains benzalkonium Cl. May cause blurred vision & sensitivity to light; patients should avoid driving or engaging in other hazardous activities unless vision is clear. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Accommodation disorder, photophobia, eye pain, ocular discomfort, blurred vision.
Drug Interactions
Enhanced effects w/ other antimuscarinic drugs eg, amantadine, antihistamines, phenothiazine & TCAs.
