Live attenuated varicella-zoster virus (Oka/Merck strain)
Indications/Uses
Prevention of herpes zoster & herpes zoster-related post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). Reduction of acute & chronic zoster-associated pain. Immunization of adults ≥50 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity to varicella-zoster virus & neomycin. Risk of serious or fatal disseminated vaccine strain varicella-zoster virus disease in immunodeficient or immunosuppressed individuals due to disease or therapy. Primary & acquired immunodeficiency states due to conditions eg, acute & chronic leukemias; lymphoma; other conditions affecting bone marrow or lymphatic system; immunosuppression due to HIV/AIDS; cellular immune deficiencies. Immunosuppressive therapy (including high-dose corticosteroids). Active untreated TB. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Not for intravascular inj. Hypersensitivity reactions. Consider vaccination deferral in febrile patients (>38.5°C or >101.3°F). HIV infection. Risk of vaccine virus transmission to susceptible contacts. Lactation. Not recommended for use in childn.
Adverse Reactions
Erythema, pain, swelling, pruritus. Hematoma, warmth, induration; headache; extremity pain. Inj site reactions.
Drug Interactions
Reduced immunogenicity w/ pneumococcal vaccine.
