Betaxolol HCl
Indications/Uses
Chronic open-angle glaucoma, ocular HTN.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult including elderly 1-2 drops into affected eye bd.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Sinus bradycardia, 2nd or 3rd degree AV block, overt cardiac failure or cardiogenic shock.
Special Precautions
History of atopy or severe anaphylaxis. CV disease (eg, CHD, Prinzmetal's angina & cardiac failure) & hypotension; severe peripheral circulatory distrubances/disorders (eg, Raynaud's syndrome). Patients w/ excessive restriction of pulmonary function. Spontaneous hypoglycaemia or w/ labile diabetes. Hyperthyroidism. Muscle weakness consistent w/ certain myasthenic symptoms (eg, diplopia, ptosis & generalized weakness). Avoid abrupt w/drawal. Angle-closure glaucoma. Remove contact lenses prior to application & wait 15 min before reinsertion. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Hepatic & renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Ocular discomfort. Headache, blurred vision, increased lacrimation, foreign body sensation in eyes.
Drug Interactions
Hypotension &/or marked bradycardia w/ oral Ca-channel blockers, β-adrenergic blockers, catecholamine-depleting drugs (eg, reserpine), antiarrhythmics (eg, amiodarone), digitalis glycosides or adrenergic psychotropic drugs. Potential additive effect on IOP w/ oral β-adrenergic blocking agents. Decreased response to adrenaline.
