Mupirocin
Indications/Uses
Primary skin infections: Impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis, ecthyma. Secondary skin infections: Secondary infected dermatoses eg, eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, herpes, epidermolysis bullosa, ichthyosis & infected traumatic lesions eg, skin ulcers, minor burns, cuts, abrasions, small lacerations, sutured wounds, biopsy sites, surgical incisions & insect bites. Prophylaxis to bacterial contamination of minor burns, biopsy sites, incisions & other clean lesions. For abrasions, minor cuts & wounds,; prevent the development of infection & permit wound healing.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Apply a small amount on the affected area tid for up to 10 days.
Special Precautions
Discontinue in case of sensitivity or severe local irritation. Do not use at the site of central venous cannulation; areas w/ large amounts of polyethylene glycol (PEG) may be absorbed (eg, in open wounds, extensive burns, broken skin) particularly in patients w/ moderate to severe renal impairment. Long-term use. Avoid contact w/ eyes. Do not apply concurrently w/ other topical medications.
Adverse Reactions
Cellulitis, pharyngitis, secondary wound infection, upper resp tract infection; angioedema, application site hypersensitivity reactions, systemic allergic reactions; dizziness, headache; abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, ulcerative stomatitis; burning sensation, contact dermatitis, cutaneous sensitization reactions, erythema, exfoliative dermatitis, furunculosis, hives, itching, pain, pruritus, rash, skin dryness, stinging, urticaria; fever, increased exudates, injury, pain or bleeding secondary to eczema, swelling, tenderness.
