Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Pneumonia, UTI, gynaecological, skin & skin structure infections 500 mg IV 8 hrly. Nosocomial pneumonias, peritonitis, presumed infections in febrile neutropenic patients, septicaemia 1 g IV 8 hrly. Meningitis 2 g 8 hrly. Adjust dose in patients w/ CrCl <51 mL/min. Childn >3 mth-12 yr 10-20 mg/kg 8 hrly depending on type & severity of infection. Meningitis 40 mg/kg 8 hrly. Febrile episodes in neutropenic patients 20 mg/kg 8 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Hepatic disease, history of GI complaints (pseudomembranous colitis has been reported). Pregnancy & lactation, childn <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Local IV inj reactions. Rash, pruritus, urticaria. Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. Reversible thrombocythaemia, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia & neutropenia. Increase in serum conc of bilirubin, liver enzymes. Headache, paraesthesiae. Oral & vag candidosis.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid, nephrotoxic drugs, valproic acid.
