Indications/Uses
Symptomatic treatment of chronic constipation in adults in whom laxatives fail to provide adequate relief.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 2 mg once daily. Older people >65 yr & patients w/ severe hepatic impairment 1 mg once daily. May increase to 2 mg once daily if needed. Patients w/ severe renal impairment 1 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Intestinal perforation or obstruction due to structural or functional disorder of the gut wall, obstructive ileus, severe inflammatory conditions of the intestinal tract eg, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis & toxic megacolon/megarectum. Renal impairment requiring dialysis.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ severe & clinically unstable concomitant disease (eg, CV or lung disease, neurological or psychiatric disorders, cancer or AIDS & other endocrine disorders). In cases of severe diarrhoea, efficacy of OCs may be reduced. Rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. May impair ability to drive & use machines. Patients w/ severe renal impairment or severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh class C). Not recommended during pregnancy & in women of childbearing potential not using contraception. Lactation. Not to be used in childn & adolescent <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain. Decreased appetite; dizziness; vomiting, dyspepsia, flatulence, abnormal GI sounds; fatigue.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc of erythromycin.
