Oxcarbazepine
Indications/Uses
Treatment of partial seizures (w/ or w/o secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizures) & generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Monotherapy, Combination therapy Initially 600 mg/day given in 2 divided doses. Maintenance dose: 600-2,400 mg/day. Infant ≥1 mth Initially 8-10 mg/kg/day given in 2 divided doses. Max: 60 mg/kg/day. 
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Monitor serum Na levels. Monitor cases of impaired cardiac conduction. Severe renal & liver dysfunction. Abrupt discontinuation of treatment. Cross-allergy to carbamazepine. Caution in driving or using machinery. Susp Fructose intolerance. Administer vit K1 in neonates as a preventive measure in the few wk of pregnancy & newborn. May affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, lightheadedness, headache, dizziness, diplopia, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, hyponatremia, confusional state, depression, apathy, restlessness, affect lability, ataxia, tremor, nystagmus; attention, memory & vision disturbances; diplopia, blurred vision, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, exanthema, alopecia, acne, asthenia.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol, OCs, phenytoin, ciclosporin, tacrolimus, carbamazepine, phenobarb.
