Bisacodyl
Indications/Uses
Constipation. Prep for diagnostic procedures in pre- & post-op treatment & in conditions which require defecation.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult & childn >10 yr 1-2 tab/day. Childn 6-10 yr 1 tab/day. Adult supp Adult & childn >10 yr 1 supp/day. Paed supp Childn 6-10 yr 1 supp/day.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take on an empty stomach for rapid effect. Do not take w/in 1 hr of antacids, milk or other dairy products.
Contraindications
Ileus, intestinal obstruction, acute surgical abdominal conditions, appendicitis, acute inflammatory bowel diseases; severe dehydration.
Special Precautions
Not to be taken on a continuous daily basis or for extended periods w/o investigating the cause of constipation. Avoid prolonged use.
Adverse Reactions
Rarely, abdominal discomfort & diarrhoea. Allergic reactions.
Drug Interactions
At high doses, risk of electrolyte imbalance increased w/ concurrent use of diuretics & adrenocorticoids. Cardiac glycosides. Do not take together w/ products reducing the acidity of the upper GIT eg, milk, antacids, or proton pump inhibitors in order not to prematurely dissolve the enteric coating.
