Indications/Uses
Pneumonia & nosocomial pneumonia, UTI, intra-abdominal, gynecological, skin & skin structure infections, meningitis, septicemia. Empiric treatment for presumed infections in adult patients w/ febrile neutropenia, as monotherapy or in combination w/ antiviral or antifungal agents.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Adult Pneumonia, UTI, gynecological infections, skin & skin structure infections 500 mg 8 hrly. Nosocomial pneumonia, presumed infections in neutropenic patient, septicemia 1 g 8 hrly. Meningitis 2 g 8 hrly. Childn 3 mth-12 yr 10-20 mg/kg 8 hrly. Childn >50 kg Adult dose. Meningitis 40 mg/kg 8 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Cross-allergenicity w/ other carbapenems, other β-lactams, penicillin, cephalosporins. Methicillin-resistant staphylococci infections. History of GI complaints especially colitis. Hepatic disease.
Adverse Reactions
Local IV inj site reactions; rash, pruritus, urticaria; abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis; reversible thrombocythemia, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, neutropenia; increased bilirubin, transaminase, alkaline phosphatase & lactic dehydrogenase; headache, paresthesia, convulsion; systemic allergic reactions (rare); oral & vag candidiasis.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid, potentially nephrotoxic drugs.
