Indications/Uses

Adjunctive therapy to standard antiepileptic drugs in patients not controlled w/ or intolerant to doses of antiepileptic drugs either single or in combination. Add-on therapy for simple & complex partial seizures & secondarily generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult & childn >12 yr 900-1,800 mg daily in divided doses 3 times daily. Day 1: 300 mg once daily. Day 2: 300 mg twice daily. Day 3: 300 mg 3 times daily. May be increased to 1,200 mg daily in 3 divided doses. Max: 2,400 mg daily.

Overdosage

Special Precautions

Gradually w/draw over a min of at least 1 wk. Incidence of new tumor, worsening or recurrence of tumor at diagnosis of the tumor that was not previously known. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.

Adverse Reactions

Drowsiness, dizziness or ataxia, fatigue, nystagmus, tremor, nervousness, dysarthria, amnesia, depression, twitching, abnormal coordination, headache, confusion, insomnia, abnormal thinking, emotional lability; dyspepsia, dry mouth or throat, constipation, dental abnormalities, increased appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, anorexia; peripheral edema, vasodilation, HTN, hypotension, angina pectoris, peripheral vascular disorder, palpitation, tachycardia, heart murmur, generalized edema; rhinitis, pharyngitis, coughing, pneumonia, epistaxis, dyspnea; myalgia, arthralgia, back pain & fracture; pruritus or abrasion, rash or acne; leukopenia, purpura, anemia, thrombocytopenia; diplopia, amblyopia.
