Pioglitazone
Indications/Uses
Combination therapy w/ sulphonylurea or metformin in patients w/ type 2 DM (NIDDM) when monotherapy is inadequate.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Combination therapy w/ metformin & sulphonylurea Initially 15-30 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hepatic dysfunction, heart failure (NYHA stages III or IV), combination w/ insulin, type 1 DM or ketoacidosis.
Special Precautions
Fluid retention, cardiac failure. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescent <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Anemia, wt gain, headache, arthralgia; increased appetite & lactate dehydrogenase level; hypoglycaemia, glycosuria, visual disturbances.
Drug Interactions
Cytochrome P-450 3A4 inhibitor or inducer.
