Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of postop pain & inflammation associated w/ cataract surgery. Reduction in risk of postop macular edema associated w/ cataract surgery in non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy patients.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Prevention & treatment of postop pain & inflammation associated w/ cataract surgery 1 drop in the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) once daily beginning 1 day prior to cataract surgery & continued on the day of surgery & for the the first 2 wk (14 days) of the postop period. Administer an additional drop 30-120 min preop. Treatment can be extended to the first 3 wk (21 days) of the postop period. Reduction in the risk of macular edema associated w/ cataract surgery in nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy patients 1 drop in the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) once daily beginning 1 day prior to surgery, continued on the day of surgery & up to 60 days of the postop period. Administer an additional drop 30-120 min preop.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to nepafenac or to other NSAIDs. Patients in whom attacks of asthma, urticaria or acute rhinitis are precipitated by acetylsalicylic acid or other NSAIDs.
Special Precautions
For ocular use only. Administer at least 5 min apart w/ other topical ophth medicinal product; eye oint should be administered last. Discontinue use in patients w/ corneal epithelial breakdown evidence & closely monitor for corneal health. Concomitant use w/ corticosteroids. Repeat &/or complicated ocular surgeries, corneal denervation & epithelial defects, DM, ocular surface diseases, dry eye or RA; known bleeding tendencies or who are receiving other medicinal products which may prolong bleeding time. Contains benzalkonium Cl which may cause eye irritation, discolor soft contact lenses, punctate keratopathy &/or toxic ulcerative keratopathy. Closely monitor during frequent &/or prolonged use. Potential for cross-sensitivity to acetylsalicylic acid, phenylacetic acid derivatives, & other NSAIDs. May mask an acute ocular infection. May affect the ability to drive or use machines. Not to be used by women of child bearing potential not using contraception. Not recommended during pregnancy. Lactation. Not recommended in ped patients.
Adverse Reactions
Corneal perforation, thinning, opacity, scar, ulcerative keratitis, impaired healing (cornea), reduced visual acuity, eye swelling, ocular hyperaemia; vomiting; increased BP.
Drug Interactions
Increased potential for healing problems w/ topical steroids. Increased risk of hemorrhage w/ medications that prolong bleeding time. Not recommended w/ prostaglandin analogues.
