Methylprednisolone
Indications/Uses
Endocrine disorders, collagen & haematologic disorders, dermatologic, allergic, ophth, GI, resp & neoplastic diseases, oedematous states, acute exacerbation of multiple sclerosis, TB meningitis w/ subarachnoid block.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 4-48 mg daily in a single or divided doses. Sclerosis 160 mg daily for 1 wk & followed by 64 mg daily for 1 mth.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Systemic fungal infections.
Special Precautions
Cataracts, nonspecific ulcerative colitis, adrenocorticoid insufficiency, HTN, osteoporosis. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Na & fluid retention, osteoporosis, hyperpigmentation, convulsion, increased intracranial, IOP, decreased carbohydrate tolerance.
Drug Interactions
Reduced efficacy of phenytoin, phenobarb, rifampicin. Corticosteroids may reduce effects of diuretics, hypoglycaemics, anticholinesterases, salicylates.
