Lovastatin
Indications/Uses
Reduction of total LDL cholesterol in primary hypercholesterolemia inadequately controlled by diet & non-pharmacologic procedures. Hypercholesterolemia associated w/ hypertriglyceridemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 20 mg once daily w/ meals (dinner). Doses may be increased until max 80 mg daily in single or divided doses w/ 4 wk intervals. Patients under immunosuppressant treatment or w/ severe renal dysfunction (CrCl <30 mL/min) Max: 20 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Active liver disease. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Not for hypertriglyceridemia w/o cholesterolemia. Monitoring of eye lens in patients w/ cataract. Familial homozygote hypercholesterolemia. Liver function test should be done during treatment. Patient <20 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, headache, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, muscle & abdominal cramps, nausea, skin redness, pruritus, myalgia, myopathy, asthenia, dry mouth, insomnia, taste disturbances, chest pain, eye irritation, ophthalmoplegia, musculoskeletal disorders, alopecia, increased serum transaminase, rhabdomyolysis, pancreatitis, hepatitis, gynecomastia, visual disturbances.
Drug Interactions
Nicotinic acid, gemfibrozil, cyclosporin.
ATC Classification
C10AA02 - lovastatin ; Belongs to the class of HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. Used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
