Meropenem
Indications/Uses
Pneumonia & nosocomial pneumonia, UTI, intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infection ie, endometritis, skin & skin structure infections, meningitis, septicemia. Empiric treatment in adult patients w/ febrile neutropenia as a monotherapy or combined therapy w/ antiviral or antifungal.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Pneumonia, UTI, gynecological infections ie, endometritis, skin & skin structure infections 500 mg IV 8 hrly. Nosocomial pneumonia, peritonitis, suspected infection w/ symptoms of neutropenia, septicemia 1 g IV 8 hrly. Meningitis 2 g IV 8 hrly. Childn >50 kg Adult dose. Childn 3 mth to 12 yr 10-20 mg/kg/8 hr. Meningitis 40 mg/kg/8 hr.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ anaphylactic reactions to β-lactam.
Special Precautions
Cross allergy to penicillin & cephalosporins. Patients w/ history of GI complaints especially colitis. Monitor transaminase & bilirubin level in patients w/ liver disease. Patients who are using nephrotoxicity drug. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, constipation, rash, pruritus, urticaria, apnea, phlebitis, thrombophlebitis, oedema & pain at inj site, increased serum transaminase, alkaline phophatase, lactate dehydrogenase; anaphylaxis, pseudomembranous colitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid may inhibit secretion.
