Methylergometrine maleate
Indications/Uses
Management of 3rd stage of labour; uterine bleeding following separation of placenta, subinvolution of puerperal uterus, lochiometra; uterine bleeding following caesarian section or abortion.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Amp Management of 3rd stage of labour ½-1 mL IM following delivery of head or anterior shoulder or at least immediately after child delivery. Caesarian section 1 mL IM or ½-1 mL IV after delivery. Puerperal subinvolution, lochiometra, bleeding ½-1 mL IM.
Contraindications
1st stage of labour, 2nd stage of labour before crowning of head, primary & secondary uterine inertia, HTN, toxemia.
Special Precautions
Administer after delivery of the child & in multiple births after delivery of the last child. HTN, sepsis, vascular obliteration disease, liver or kidney disorders.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain (large doses). Skin disease, headache, CV reactions eg, HTN, vertigo, tachycardia, bradycardia.
Drug Interactions
May cause peripheral vasoconstriction w/ anaesth agent. May reduce nitroglycerin or antianginal drug effect. May cause sleeplessness w/ ergot alkaloids.
ATC Classification
G02AB01 - methylergometrine ; Belongs to the class of ergot alkaloids. Used to induce abortion or augment labour and to minimize blood loss from the placental site.
