Atorvastatin
Indications/Uses
Adjunct to diet for the reduction of elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B & triglycerides in patient w/ primary hypercholesterolemia, combined (mixed) hyperlipidemia, heterozygotes & homozygotes familial hypercholesterolemia when response to diet & non-pharmacological measures are inadequate. Reduce risk of fatal CHD & non-fatal MI, stroke & revascularization & angina pectoris procedures.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualized dosage. Usual starting dose: 10-20 mg once daily. Dosage range: 10-80 mg once daily. Adjust dose at 2-4 wk after lipid levels are analyzed.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Active liver disease. Women of childbearing potential w/ inadequate contraception. Unexplained persistent elevation of serum transaminases. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Elevations of serum transaminase. Patients w/ diffuse myalgia, vomiting, confusion, muscle pain & tenderness or weakness. Heavy alcohol use. History of liver disease. Discontinue treatment if significant increase in CPK levels or myopathy is suspected or diagnosed.
Adverse Reactions
Pain; headache; diarrhea; myalgia, arthralgia; UTI; nasopharyngitis.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of myopathy w/ cyclosporine, fibric acid derivatives, niacin, PIs or CYP450 inhibitors eg, erythromycin & azole antifungals.

C10AA05 - atorvastatin ; Belongs to the class of HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. Used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
