Meropenem trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment in adult & childn of infections caused by single or multiple bacteria sensitive to meropenem: Pneumonias & nosocomial pneumonias, UTI, intra-abdominal infections, gynaecological infections eg, endometritis, skin & skin structure infections, meningitis, septicaemia. Empiric treatment for presumed infections in adults w/ febrile neutropenia. Polymicrobial infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Pneumonia, UTI, gynecological infections eg, endometritis, skin & structure infections 500 mg IV 8 hrly. Nosocomial pneumonias, peritonitis, presumed infections in neutropenic patient, septicemia 1 g IV 8 hrly. Meningitis 2 g 8 hrly. Renal impairment CrCl 26-50 mL/min 1 unit dose 12 hrly; 10-25 mL/min ½ unit dose 12 hrly; <10 mL/min ½ unit dose 24 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Hepatic disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <3 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Inflammation, thrombophlebitis, pain at inj site, rash, pruritus, urticaria. Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis. Reversible thrombocythemia, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, neutropenia; increase in serum conc of bilirubin, transaminase, alkaline phosphatase & lactic acid dehydrogenase; headache, paresthesias; oral & vag candidiasis.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid, valproic acid, other nephrotoxics.
