Ketoconazole
Indications/Uses
Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis not responsive to nystatin/other antifungals. Systemic mycotic infections: candidosis, chromomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, paracoccidioidomycosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Mycosis infections (except vag candidiasis) Adult 1 tab w/ meals for 14 days. If not responsive, doses may be increased to 400 mg. Vag candidiasis 2 tab for 5 days. Childn 5-12 yr 100 mg, 1-4 yr 50 mg. All doses should be taken once daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Concomitant use w/ astemizole or terfenadine. Liver disease. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Monitor physiology of liver during long-term treatment (>14 days). Lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, skin rash, urticaria, headache, constipation, pruritus, hypersensitivity reactions, hepatotoxicity, gynecomastia, thrombocytopenia, paresthesia, photophobia, exanthema, dizziness, alopecia, anaphylactic reactions, fever & tremors, somnolence, impotence.
Drug Interactions
Anticholinergics, antacids, H2-receptor antagonists, chlordiazepoxide, cyclosporin, methylprednisolone, quinidine, warfarin, terfenadine, astemizole, theophylline, rifampicin, phenytoin.
