Itraconazole
Indications/Uses
Short-term treatment of vulvovag candidiasis, pityriasis versicolor, dermatomycosis, fungal keratitis, oral candidiasis. Long-term treatment of onicomycosis & systemic mycosis ie, Aspergillosis, candidiasis, cryptococcosis (including cryptococcal meningitis), histoplasmosis, sporotrichosis, paracoccioidomycosis, systemic blastomycosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Superficial fungal infection (tinea corporis, cruris, pedis, manus; oral candidiasis) 100 mg once daily. Duration of therapy: Tinea corporis/cruris, oral candidiasis: 15 days. Tinea pedis/manus: 30 days. Pityriasis versicolor, vag candidiasis, fungal keratitis 200 mg once daily. Duration of therapy: Pityriasis versicolor: 7 days. Vag candidiasis: 3 days. Fungal keratitis: 3 wk. Long-term therapy: Aspergillosis 200 mg once daily for 2-5 mth. Candidiasis 100-200 mg once daily for 3 wk-7 mth. Non-meningeal cryptococcosis 200 mg once daily 2 mth-1 yr. Cryptococcal meningitis 200 mg twice daily for 2 mth-1 yr. Histoplasmosis 200 mg 1-2 times daily for 8 mth. Sporotrichosis 100 mg once daily for 3 mth. Paracoccidioidomycosis 100 mg once daily for 6 mth. Blastomycosis 100-200 mg 1-2 times daily for 6 mth.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after a full meal.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ history of liver disease or hepatotoxicity due to other drugs. Abnormal kidney function. Discontinue if neuropathy occurs. Monitor liver enzyme test. Lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Short-term treatment: Nausea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, dyspepsia, pruritus, rash, urticaria, angioedema, reversible increase of liver enzyme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Long-term treatment: GI disorders, hypokalemia, edema, reversible increase of liver enzyme, hepatitis, hair loss, peripheral neuropathy.
Drug Interactions
Rifampicin, phenytoin, antacid, adsorben, H2-antagonist, rifampicin, cyclosporine A, warfarin, digoxin.
