Methylprednisolone
Indications/Uses
Collagen, allergy, autoimmune, certain dermatological disease, acute & chronic ophth infections, neoplasia, ulcerative colitis & Crohn's disease, nephrotic syndrome, rejection of organ transplantation, certain endocrine disorders, hematological disorders, rheumatic diseases.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 4-48 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
TB (except fulminant or disseminated form), systemic fungal infection, vaccinia/varicella, keratitis herpes simplex, peptic ulcer, Cushing's syndrome, acute psychosis, recent immunization.
Special Precautions
In prolonged use (>1-2 wk), doses should be gradually reduced. May mask the signs of infection. Long-term use may cause subcapsular cataract, glaucoma, activated of ocular viral or fungal infection. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Moon face, fatty deposit in the certain part of the body, muscle weakness, HTN, osteoporosis, reduced glucose tolerance, impairment of the secretion of sexual hormones, striae, petechiae, acne, edema, hypokalemia, cortex adrenal atrophy, vasculitis, peptic ulcer, impaired wound healing & growth in childn, glaucoma, cataract, thrombosis, psychosis, allergic reactions.
Drug Interactions
Cardiac glycosides, diuretic, coumarine anticoagulants, oral antidiabetics, rifampicin, phenytoin, barbiturate, NSAIDs, cyclosporine, erythromycin, ketoconazole, neuromuscular blocking agents (ie, pancuronium).
