Vit D
Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of vit D deficiency. Adjunctive therapy to osteoporosis in patients w/ vit D deficiency or at risk of vit D insufficiency.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Prevention of vit D deficiency Adult 25,000 IU mthly as single dose. Childn 1-18 yr 25,000 IU as single dose every 6 wk, 0-1 yr 25,000 IU as single dose every 8 wk. Treatment of vit D deficiency (<25 ng/mL) Adult 50,000 IU wkly as 2-single dose for 6-8 wk, followed by maintenance therapy: 1,400-2,000 IU daily. Childn 0-18 yr 25,000 IU as single dose once every 2 wk for 6 wk, followed by maintenance therapy: 400-1,000 IU daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Adult: Content can be emptied directly into the mouth or onto the spoon. Childn: Mix w/ a small amount of food, yogurt, milk, cheese or dairy products. Do not mix w/ milk bottle or container of soft food. For childn who are not breastfed, the prescribed dose should be administered w/ a meal.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hypercalcaemia &/or hypercalciuria; nephrolithiasis &/or nephrocalcinosis; hypervitaminosis D; pseudohypoparathyroidism. Serious renal impairment.
Special Precautions
Sarcoidosis. Avoid excessive intake of vit D. Patients receiving treatment for CV disease. Concomitant use of Ca supplements. Not to be used in severe renal impairment. Not recommended during pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypercalcaemia, hypercalciuria; pruritus, rash & urticaria.
Drug Interactions
Reduced effect w/ anticonvulsants eg, phenytoin, barbiturates or glucocorticoids. Decreased urinary elimination of Ca w/ thiazide diuretics. Increased risk of digitalis toxicity (arrhythmia) w/ drugs containing digitalis & other cardiac glycosides. Reduced GI absorption w/ ion exchange resin eg, cholestyramine, colestipol HCl, orlistat or laxative eg, paraffin oil. Interfered vit D activity w/ actinomycin & imidazole antifungal agents.
