Indications/Uses
ENT infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, UTI, gonorrhoea, gynaecological & GI infections, septicaemia, peritonitis, endocarditis, meningitis, enteric fever. Extraperitoneal application to prevent wound infection following abdominal surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult including elderly Septicaemia, endocarditis, osteomyelitis 500 mg IM or IV 4-6 times daily for 1-6 wk. Peritonitis, intra-abdominal sepsis 500 mg IM or IV qds. Adult Meningitis 2 g IV 6-hrly. Childn 150 mg/kg IV daily in divided doses. Local use in abdominal surgery 1 g sprinkled extraperitoneally into wound or muscle layers. Childn <10 yr Usual dose: ½ adult dose.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins & cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to β-lactam antibiotics. Infectious mononucleosis, acute or chronic lymphoid leukemia. Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms in prolonged use. Severe renal impairment (CrCl <10 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Skin rash, pruritus, urticaria, purpura; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; moderate & transient increase in transaminases.
Drug Interactions
Substantial mutual inactivation w/ aminoglycosides. Interfered bactericidal action by bacteriostatic drugs. Reduced efficacy of OCs. Decreased renal tubular secretion by probenecid. Increased allergic skin reactions w/ allopurinol.
