Indications/Uses
Constipation & bowel evacuation before investigational procedures or surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Constipation 10 mg in the morning. Childn <10 yr 5 mg in the morning. Complete bowel evacuation Adult & childn >10 yr 10-20 mg PO followed by 10 mg supp the next morning. Childn <10 yr 15 mg PO the night before & 5 mg the morning of the procedure.
Contraindications
Other stimulant laxatives. Prolonged use.
Special Precautions
Not for patients w/ intestinal obstruction or acute abdominal conditions (eg, appendicitis); inflammatory bowel disease; severe dehydration. Avoid in patients w/ anal fissures, proctitis or ulcerated hemorrhoids; prolonged use. May cause abdominal discomfort eg, colic or cramps; diarrhea; irritation & proctitis (repeated use).
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal discomfort eg, colic or cramps; diarrhea (prolonged use); possibility of developing an atonic non-functioning colon; irritation; proctitis or sloughing of the epithelium (repeated use).
